About
Sleep Disorders
Sleep is important for renewing our mental health each day. More
than 100 million, one of every four Americans, regularly fail
to get a good nights’ sleep. At least 84 disorders of sleeping
and waking lead to a lowered quality of life and personal health.
Sleep disorders can be diagnosed and treated.
What
should I expect during a sleep test?
Activities that go on in your body during sleep such as brain
waves, muscle eye movements, breathing, snoring, heart rate and
leg movements, are monitored by electrodes applied to your head
and skin with adhesive. Flexible elastic belts around the chest
and abdomen measure breathing. Blood oxygen levels and heart rate
are monitored by a flexible clip on your index finger or earlobe.
How
will I be able to sleep in a strange environment with all those
wires?
The surroundings and sleeping rooms at an American Sleep &Wellness
center are homey and comfortable. The equipment and technician
will be in a separate room, and the electrode wires will be gathered
in a ponytail behind your head so you will be able to roll over
and change positions.
What
should I bring and do before the sleep study?
You should pack an overnight bag as you would for an overnights
stay at a hotel or friends house. You may want to include your
own pillow and extra clothing. On the day of your sleep study,
avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, coke, chocolate) after 2:00 pm and
try not to nap. Wash and dry your hair and do not apply any hair
sprays, oils or gels.
Should
I take my medication as usual?
It is important to let your sleep professional know if you are
taking any prescribed of over-the-counter medications, certain
medications can affect sleep and the interpretation of the study.
Sometimes certain medications need to be discontinued gradually
prior to a sleep study so that the results can be interpreted
correctly. Do not discontinue any prescription medication without
first talking with your healthcare professional.
Memory
& Cognitive Assessment & Enhancement
About
American Sleep & Wellness' Memory & Cognitive Care
American Sleep & Wellness has the ability to test your cognitive
health using the Cognitive Care System. Cognitive health relates
to mental processes of comprehension, reasoning, memory and judgment.
What
is the Cognitive Care System?
The system utilizes tests to detect early signs of cognitive impairment
such as memory loss and slower reaction time, allowing your doctor
to treat problems before they become serious. The tests are based
on patented technology called NCAT™ (Neuro-Cognitive Chronometric
Assessment Technology). NCAT™ consists of computerized reaction
time tasks that are significantly more sensitive and objective
than conventional paper-based question and answer psychometric
tests. By using NCAT™ to assess the brain's efficiency and information
processing speed, your doctor can detect and monitor subtle changes
in attention, memory and thinking.
How
Does It Work?
The Cognitive Care system combines traditional research on stimulus-response
with online internet computer technology. This innovative technology
accurately records reaction time and quickly displays the test
results. By using the internet, test results are instantaneously
send to a central database for anonymous comparison to others
of the same age and gender. Your doctor is able to access a comprehensive
report for review and discussion of your results.
What Do The Results Show?
Your test results will help your doctor to determine if there
is a need for further evaluation. Most patients will be relieved
to know that their cognitive functioning is normal for their age.
Why
Should I Be Tested?
Just as the medical community presently screens for blood pressure,
diabetes and cholesterol, early detection is key to effectively
managing cognitive conditions. By establishing a baseline or benchmark,
your doctor will be able to identify potential problems at an
earlier stage and begin proper medical treatment.
When
Should I Start Being Tested?
Even if you do not feel you have a problem now, we strongly suggest
getting annual cognitive check-ups if you are:
• 40
years of age or older
• Have a family history of Alzheimer's disease
• Have ever been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder
• Believe medication is impacting your memory
Are
There Other Reasons I Might Be Tested?
Yes, your doctor may want to monitor the effectiveness of the
medication you have been prescribed. You may also want to reassure
yourself that other medications are not hampering your memory,
mental acuity and quickness.
What
If My Test Results Are Abnormal?
Your doctor may recommend that your test be repeated to avoid
any possibility of a false positive result. Your doctor will then
formulate a treatment plan based on your results and medical history.
Is
The Data Confidential?
Yes, only you and your doctor's office have access to your results.
How
Can I Improve My Memory?
Your doctor may recommend interactive brain exercises, such as
ThinkFast! As well as appropriate medications and/or dietary supplements.
What
Is ThinkFast!?
ThinkFast! is a series of six fun and exciting memory challenges
or brain exercise games. Users typically notice improvement in
awareness, alertness, reaction time, decision making, memory and
concentration.
What
Do I Do Next?
If you are concerned about your memory or cognitive health, meet
any of the conditions above in or simply want to sharpen your
brain power and improve your cognitive health and fitness, ask
your healthcare provider or schedule an assessment at American
Sleep & Wellness.
OVERVIEW
OF TESTS:
PSYCHOMOTOR
REFLEXES
Traditionally known as a simple reaction time test, the psychomotor
test measures your physical reflexes.
DELAYED
MEMORY
This test measures the recall speed and capacity and accuracy
of your short-term memory, also known as delayed memory.
WORKING
MEMORY
This test measures the speed you can correctly determine the association
between a word and a picture. It may also reflect how well your
left and right brain are integrated and measure how quickly your
mind can switch from one mode of operation to another. This test
is believed to reflect cognitive or executive processing speed,
efficiency and fluidity.
IMMEDIATE
MEMORY
This test measures the speed and accuracy of the short-term or
immediate memory. The immediate memory test is very sensitive
to subtle influences on your brain, including certain prescription
drugs, nicotine, caffeine, sleep depravation, alcohol, exercise,
and nutritional supplements such as ginkgo biloba.
